Artist Statement
Isabella Mazzitelli is a contemporary fine artist working primarily in acrylic, with a focus on portraiture. Her work seeks to capture the tangible beauty and vitality of human flesh tones, expressing emotion while preserving the warmth that radiates from each individual
Mazzitelli’s technique involves layering paint with a flat-edge brush to construct small, organically arranged geometric shapes that form the surface of the skin. Through this structured process, warm and cool tones emerge, building depth and subtle variation in color while maintaining value. This approach allows the subject’s skin to stand apart from surrounding elements—such as hair and clothing—while balancing anatomical accuracy with organic abstraction.
Her practice reflects a lifelong engagement with visual expression. Beginning in early childhood, she explored a range of media, including sculpture, drawing, and painting, gradually developing a personal approach that merges representational imagery with abstract influence. This evolution is seen in her work through a maturing technique, where accumulated flesh tones layer and laminate the surface of the skin, constructing the figure with precision and forming a portrait with intriguing attributes that emerge through color, texture, and structure.
Her work invites viewers to pay closer attention to the fine markings and transitions in color that envelop the face. Mazzitelli honors those she depicts, creating portraits that commemorate their presence and accentuate their being. Through this process, she seeks not only to represent her subjects, but to preserve them—rendering each painting as a lasting impression of life, warmth, and presence.
